10 Great Family Picnic Spots in Regina

Summer is in full swing and kids are excited to enjoy their vacations around the city. From Milky Way ice cream trips to days at the beach, there’s plenty to do around Regina this summer. One of our favourite summer activities is going for picnics and there are several great picnic locations around the city.

TIP: Bring your own sanitizing wipes or hand sanitizer to use before and after playground equipment use.

1. Sandra Schmirler Leisure Centre

This location has a large grass area around the spray pad so bring a picnic blanket to sit on. In addition to the spray pad, there is a playground perfect for tots. There is a nice pond right beside the large play structure perfect for a stroll or watching the ducks!

Location: 3130 Woodhams Drive

2. Candy Cane Park

This was one of my favourite parks as a kid and I remember going there for picnics 25+ years ago. The park looks different than it did back then but it’s still a great park with lots of cool upgrades and playground equipment that you won’t find at any other location around the city. There are a few picnic tables here.

Location: 501 Wascana Drive

3. South Leisure Centre

This location has a few picnic tables, a splash pad and a playground so there is plenty to keep kids entertained. The picnic tables get scooped up quickly so be sure to bring a picnic blanket for the grass.

Location: 170 Sunset Drive

4. Rick Hansen Optimist Park

My son (5 years old) loves this playground! There is a large play structure, several picnic tables, a splash pad area and is fully accessible for all children.

Location: 1010 McCarthy Boulevard

5. Norseman Park

This is one of the city’s newer playgrounds. It’s located in Harbour Landing and it includes a large play structure, a couple of picnic tables (bring picnic blankets to sit in the grass area) and has a skateboard park. The large play structure includes an area for tots plus more challenging areas for the older kids.

Location: Beacon Drive

6. McKenna Park

My son calls this the “treehouse park” because it looks like the ultimate treehouse complete with slides, swings, climbing structures and more. There are a couple of picnic tables here and a large grass area for picnics.

Location: 5033 Padwick Road

7. Fairchild Park

Its official name is “Fairchild Park” but most kids refer to it as the dinosaur park. It has a fossil & dino egg play structure, swings, a sand area where you can dig for fossils plus a few picnic tables. The climbing structure is designed for older children but my son enjoyed running around there even before he was able to climb the play structure.

Location: 5321 Aerodrome Road

8. Kinsmen South

With a play structure, a spray pad park, a large grassy area (great for a game of soccer or football) and picnic tables, there’s something at this park for all ages. It’s a busy place in the summer so bring a picnic blanket in case you have to enjoy your picnic on the grass.

Location: Westgate Avenue & Kings Road

9. A.E. Wilson Park

This park is designed for the smaller kids (toddlers) and includes a couple of toddler-sized picnic tables plus a shaded seating area. Looking to hit up two spots? The Rick Hansen Optimist Park is just across McCarthy Blvd!

Location: Brunskill Place

10. Wascana Centre

If you’re looking for space, this is the place! Grab your blanket or several and sprawl out on the grass at Wascana Centre. This park comes with a view – sit near the lake, gardens, or trees! Consider renting a canoe or kayak while your there and cruise the waters.
